Electrical Safety Checklist for Older North Carolina Homes

North Carolina has beautiful older housing, from mill villages to mid-century ranches, and most of it is overdue for an electrical check. Walk through this list; if you tick more than two boxes, schedule an electrical inspection.

  • Two-prong (ungrounded) outlets anywhere in the home
  • No GFCI outlets in kitchen, baths, garage or outdoors (GFCI installation)
  • Fuse box or panel under 100 amps
  • Federal Pacific, Zinsco, Sylvania or Challenger panel
  • Smoke detectors older than 10 years or not interconnected (smoke detector wiring)
  • Extension cords used as permanent wiring
  • Warm outlets, flickering lights or buzzing switches
  • Cloth-covered, knob and tube, or aluminum wiring
  • No whole-house surge protection (surge protection)
  • Exterior outlets without in-use covers

Most common fixes

Grounded outlet replacement, GFCI protection, panel upgrade, and in the worst cases a whole house rewire.
