Flickering Lights: Harmless Annoyance or Fire Hazard?
Every North Carolina electrician has a story about a flickering light that turned out to be a melted neutral in the panel. Not every flicker is dangerous, but some are, and here is how to tell them apart.
Flickers that are usually harmless
- One bulb flickers: loose bulb or failing LED driver
- Dimmer-controlled LEDs flicker: incompatible dimmer, fixed with an LED-rated dimmer
- Brief dip when the AC starts: normal in older homes, but worth checking if it worsens
Flickers that need an electrician
- Whole rooms or the whole house flicker: loose neutral, failing main breaker or utility connection
- Flickering with buzzing, heat or smell: arcing, call emergency service now
- Lights brighten in one room while dimming in another: lost neutral, dangerous to electronics and a fire risk
- Flickering that started after storm damage or a tree hit the service line
What we check
Panel connections, main lugs, neutral bar, the meter base and service entrance, then branch circuits. Most causes are found within the first hour of electrical troubleshooting.
