Hot Tub Electrical Requirements in North Carolina: What You Need Before Delivery
The number one reason hot tub deliveries get delayed is electrical. Here is exactly what the hot tub electrical installation involves so you are ready on delivery day.
The circuit
Most 240V spas need a dedicated 50 amp circuit; larger swim spas need 60 amps. The wire is sized for the run length to prevent voltage drop.
The GFCI disconnect
Code requires a GFCI-protected disconnect at least 5 feet from the water and within sight of the spa. This is the gray box you see near every properly installed tub.
Burial and conduit
Underground runs go in conduit at the required depth, with a proper transition to the spa pack.
Bonding
Metal within reach of the water must be bonded to the spa's bonding lug. Inspectors check this.
Panel capacity
A 50 amp spa on a 100 amp service can push you over. We run a load calculation; see panel upgrades if needed.
Permit
Yes, you need one in nearly every NC jurisdiction. We pull it and meet the inspector.
